Lifts all dampers so notes continue to sound after keys are released. The most commonly used pedal in piano playing. On both upright and grand pianos.
On grand piano: shifts the action so hammers contact fewer strings (una corda). On upright: moves hammers closer to strings to reduce volume. Changes tone as well as volume.
On grand piano: sostenuto — holds only the dampers already raised when pedal is pressed. On most upright pianos: practice (mute) pedal inserts felt between hammers and strings to greatly reduce volume.

Squeaking pedals are most commonly caused by dried-out lubricant on the pedal bushings, pedal rod joints or the metal lyre brackets. Singapore's humidity can also cause oxidation in the pedal mechanism joints. The fix involves locating the exact friction point and applying the correct lubricant — typically a 20–30 minute repair that can be done at the same visit as tuning.
On a grand piano: the right (sustain/damper) pedal lifts all dampers so notes sustain beyond key release; the left (una corda) pedal shifts the action sideways; the middle (sostenuto) pedal holds only the dampers already lifted when pressed. On a standard upright: the right pedal is the sustain, the left is the soft (half-blow) pedal that moves hammers closer to strings, and the middle is usually a practice (mute) pedal that inserts felt between hammers and strings to greatly reduce volume.
