Piano Voicing Singapore

Soften harsh tone, balance dynamics and even out treble vs bass through expert hammer needling · S$150–S$350

What Is Piano Voicing?

Piano voicing is the process of adjusting the density and resilience of hammer felt to alter the tone quality of the piano. A piano technician uses a voicing needle to insert fine punctures into the hammer felt, loosening the fibres and making the hammer softer — producing a warmer, mellower, less harsh tone. Hardening treatments (lacquer) can achieve the opposite: a brighter, clearer tone.

Piano Repair Singapore voices all piano brands islandwide, from bright Yamaha uprights requiring mellowing to older instruments needing brightness restored. Voicing is always done by ear across the full keyboard until the piano produces an even, balanced tone from bass to treble.

What Voicing Achieves

🔇

Soften Harsh Tone

Over-compressed hammer felt produces a hard, thin, bright sound. Needling opens the felt fibres, producing a warmer, fuller tone without reducing volume.

⚖️

Balance Dynamics

When some notes are noticeably louder or quieter than their neighbours, selective voicing brings all notes to a consistent dynamic level so the piano speaks evenly.

🎹

Even Treble to Bass

Treble hammers compress faster than bass hammers and often become harder sooner. Voicing blends the registers for a unified, musical sound across the full keyboard.

🎵

New Hammer Break-In

New replacement hammers are often firmer than ideal. After installation, voicing shapes their tone to suit the piano's size, strings and acoustic character.

How Voicing Works

During a voicing session, the technician listens to each note individually and compares its tone quality to its neighbours. Notes that are too bright or harsh are needled at specific points on the hammer face. Notes that are too mellow or weak may be treated with a small amount of lacquer on the strike point to firm the felt. After treating individual notes, the technician plays chords and passages up and down the keyboard to check the overall balance and make final adjustments. The result is a piano that speaks consistently and evenly in all registers.

Piano Voicing Questions

Piano voicing is the adjustment of hammer felt density to alter tone quality. A technician uses fine needles to puncture the felt, relaxing the fibres and producing a softer, warmer sound. Conversely, a small amount of lacquer can firm the felt for a brighter tone. The goal of voicing is to balance tone quality evenly across all 88 notes so the piano produces a consistent, musical sound from bass to treble at all dynamic levels.

Full voicing of an upright piano costs S$150–S$350. Grand piano voicing costs S$250–S$500. Spot voicing of individual harsh notes costs S$30–S$80 per note. Voicing after new hammer installation is included in the hammer set quote.

Under normal home use, voicing typically lasts 3–7 years before hammers harden again from repeated string contact. A piano played very frequently, or in a school or institutional setting with multiple users per day, may need voicing more often — every 2–3 years. Pianos in dry, air-conditioned environments can harden faster than those in slightly more humid conditions.

Voicing is possible on any acoustic piano with conventional hammer felt. It is not applicable to digital or electronic pianos. Pianos with very severely worn hammers (deep flat grooves, felt worn through to the core) may need hammer replacement rather than voicing — we assess and advise honestly so you do not invest in voicing when replacement is the more effective solution.
