Piano strings last 30–60 years under normal home use, but several factors accelerate failure:

A completely silent note — one that produces no sound at all when pressed, with the key and action appearing to function — is usually a broken string. You may also see the break visually if you look inside the piano (the string will hang slack or be visibly snapped). On a wound string, a broken or unravelling winding creates a distinctive buzzing or metallic rattle on that specific note.
Individual string replacement is entirely standard and is our most common string repair. We replace only the affected string(s) with a correctly matched replacement. Full restring is only recommended when strings are uniformly aged and corroded across all registers, or when the piano has not been strung for 40+ years and tone quality has degraded uniformly.
A single string replacement, including sourcing the string and completing the first tuning, typically takes 1–2 hours on-site. If the string needs to be custom-ordered (for bass strings on vintage or rare models), there may be a 2–5 day wait for the string to arrive before installation. Full restring takes 2–3 days at the workshop.
Yes — this is normal and expected. New piano strings stretch for the first few weeks after installation and will drop in pitch as they settle. We recommend 2–4 additional tuning sessions over 4–8 weeks for a newly replaced string. After this settling period, the string will hold pitch as well as the rest of the piano. For full restrings, multiple tunings over 3–6 months are typical.
